Roles aren’t all about money. And many are as qualified or more as anyone you could find in the private sector. I know one of them - has 5k people reporting to him, an engineering degree undergrad, top tier MBA, many years in key roles in the private sector. He just wanted to give back.

That is what makes the language some use to refer to Govt service these days so annoying - bureaucrats, deep state, etc. it’s very cynical and doesn’t capture the actual spirit of the people at all.

I don’t disagree that pay raises would be in order for some btw. But don’t assume Govt doesn’t get very talented people because they can’t match industry.
